Its cringeful focus on ancillary characters to make up for the embarrassing lack of diversity in the original series only slows an already ponderous show even more. The reboot has missed her – and could surely use her, no matter how brief. ![]() She had all the best lines, wore clothes that weren't completely ridiculous, lived in no doubt about who she was and what she wanted, and dropped more a than a few truth bombs ("Listen to me: the right guy is an illusion – start living your lives.") With the exception of Kim Cattrall as Samantha (left) I found the Sex and the City characters whiny, ridiculous caricatures. It was a grown-up cartoon in some pretty fine couture – and then there was Samantha. ![]() There was something kind of mesmerising about these women: the way their worst, most impulsive, most indulgent tendencies were simply allowed to rip across the screen and allow us the proxy pleasure of seeing the consequences of those disinhibitions play out. I thought Miranda was the worst kind of "working woman" caricature whose treatment of Steve puts her into the Disney villain column for all time, and I thought the character of Charlotte was just ridiculous.īut yes, I watched it all. (Also how does someone who only ever has sex on top and in her bra get to write about the sex life of a city like New York?) ![]() I thought Parker's character, Carrie, was a whiny, self-absorbed pain in the neck, who made every situation about her and who never wanted what she said she did the moment she got it. Oh, I know how negative that sounds to legions of SATC fans who'd do anything to spend time with these now-iconic characters and their inexhaustible wardrobes, so I should probably make a confession here: I hate-watched every single episode of the original show, and the two movies, and the new TV series, and I can probably recite every line of all of them just like you fans can – but for very different reasons. Kim Cattrall played the only character in Sex and the City whose sex life actually qualified her to write a sex column. ![]()
